Job Description

Job Purpose & Scope Responsible for leading the underwriting team and provides direct oversight of all residential mortgage underwriting activities. Serves as a credit authority within the mortgage division and handles the underwriting of the more complex, high-risk, mortgage loans or loans that require an exception. Essential Job Functions + Ensures the underwriting practices are aligned with investor, agency, and regulatory requirements, while also maintaining loan quality, managing workflow, and contributing to policy development. + Underwrites residential mortgage loans, including conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, and portfolio products, ensuring compliance with applicable guidelines and internal credit policy. + Manages day-to-day operations of the underwriting team, including assignment of loan files, review of work quality, productivity monitoring, and performance management. + Serves as the final decision-maker for escalated loan files and credit exceptions. + Develops and updates underwriting policies, procedures, and training materials to ensure consistency and mitigate risk. + Collaborates with processing, closing, secondary marketing, compliance, and loan officers to resolve file-level issues and improve overall workflow. + Coordinates with the quality control team to address audit findings, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions. + Monitors pipeline reports and works to ensure underwriting turn times are met across all loan products. + Participates in investor relations and audit processes as a credit subject matter expert. + Trains underwriters on new products, guideline updates, and interpretation of agency/investor policies. + Leads process improvement initiatives within the department and supports strategic mortgage objectives set by senior leadership. + Regularly exercise discretion and judgment in the performance of essential job functions. + Follows Bank policy, procedures, and guidelines.
